After a mini west coast swing where the Yankees went 4-2, they return home before heading back out West for yet another swing with the west coasters. Despite this season being a dissappointment for the Mariners (and all those “experts” who picked them as well), the M’s bring Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez into this series. Could this be a tryout for Cliff Lee?

Marcus Thames running in Scranton

 Email This Post

Just landed in New York a little while ago and heard from a couple of friends back in Scranton.

This afternoon, Marcus Thames ran the bases at PNC Field. He went from home to first and home to second while several members of the Triple-A staff watched. I heard the word “sprints,” which suggests to me that he was able to run pretty hard.

Also, Donnie Collins points out that Dustin Moseley has an out in his contract that kicks in on July 1. Moseley has been pitching well and has some major league experience. With Sergio Mitre and Alfredo Aceves on the disabled list, Donnie makes a good point that Moseley could be an alternative to Chad Gaudin or Chan Ho Park as a multi-inning reliever.

Jeter and Cano remain in front of all-star voting

 Email This Post

Here’s the final American League all-star voting update before the rosters are announced on Sunday.

Two veteran American League All-Stars, first baseman Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and outfielder Carl Crawford of the Tampa Bay Rays, are trying to hang on to their first fan-elected starting assignments in the sixth and final set of balloting figures for the 81st All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 13th at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The sixth and final National League All-Star balloting update will be released tomorrow, Tuesday, June 29th.

Morneau, a three-time A.L. All-Star, leads a tight three-way race with 2,118,654 votes, ahead of the 1,863,235 for Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees and the 1,832,782 for Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers. Crawford, last year’s Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player presented by Chevrolet, currently holds the third starting position in the outfield with 1,782,035 votes, ahead of the 1,621,771 for 2009 A.L. All-Star Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers.

For the third straight year, Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners and Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers are on track to start in the outfield for the American League. Ichiro, an All-Star in all nine of his Major League seasons and a fan-elected starter in eight of them, has drawn 1,924,904 votes. Hamilton, behind an historic June performance (.470, 9 HR, 30 RBI), has surged to 1,906,350 votes. Twins catcher Joe Mauer remains the most popular choice in all of Major League Baseball with 3,968,039 votes. Following Mauer among American League players are Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter (3,350,155); Rays third baseman Evan Longoria (3,118,600); New York second baseman Robinson Cano (2,948,269); and Rangers designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero (2,889,243).

TBS will unveil the 2010 American League and National League All-Stars on the 2010 All-Star Selection Show Presented by Taco Bell, set to air on Sunday, July 4th from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (EDT), immediately preceding TBS coverage of the 1:00 p.m. game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Moseley pulled in Scranton

Just got a text from Donnie Collins.

Dustin Moseley had been pulled from his start in Scranton. Pure speculation, but it could be a sign of a call-up.

All-star outfielder: Gardner or Swisher?

At this point, Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano seem to be locks for the All-Star Game. We’ve spent plenty of time discussing the merits of Phil Hughes and Andy Pettitte as starting pitcher options, and Mariano Rivera might be having the best season of his career.

But two Yankees outfielders have somewhat quietly put up all-star caliber numbers.

Brett Gardner might be a real dark horse candidate, especially given Joe Girardi’s stated preference for players he knows can help him win the game. As an email from Robert pointed out: “A player who can get on base, get into scoring position, and come home on any ball put in play could easily make the difference between winning and losing.”

Gardner leads all American League outfielders in on-base percentage. He’s third in runs, fourth in stolen bases and fourth in batting average.

Swisher is beating Gardner in the fan voting — no real surprise there — and he has the 10th-most home runs and the eighth-most RBI of any AL outfielder. He’s seventh in slugging percentage and 10th in on-base percentage.

If you were Joe Girardi and you had room on the roster for two outfielders, would you take the Yankees? If you could take only one, which would it be?

Go Vote For Some Yankees

Today is the final day for all-star game voting. You can check the latest results here. While Jeter and Cano have their spots pretty much locked down, and A-Rod and Posada have no chance, guys like Mark Teixeira and the entire Yankees outfield could use a last minute push. They still most likely won't make it, but do your part. You can vote up to 25 times per email address by click here.

Moseley Could Be Bronx Bound

From Tim Bontemps:
After being scratched from his start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last night, Dustin Moseley could be on his way to The Bronx.

The 28-year-old right-hander, who is 4-4 with a 4.21 ERA in 12 starts, was a late healthy scratch from his start against Rochester in favor of Kei Igawa. Because Moseley has an opt-out clause in his contract if he isn't on the major league roster by Thursday, there's a good chance he will be promoted in the next 48 hours.

As of last night, though, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said no decision had been made.If he does get called up, and the Yankees decided to go with the extra pitcher, they could send Colin Curtis or Chad Huffman back to Scranton. The other option is going with an 11-man rotation, and either sending Chad Gaudin packing or optioning Boone Logan back down to Scranton. They could say goodbye to Chan Ho Park, but I think it's more likely that Gaudin or Logan are moved.

Contreras and Newman on State of the Yankee Farm System

In a couple of posts this weekend Mike Ashmore discussed two interesting interviews he had with Nardi Contreras and Mark Newman. They each provided their current views regarding the Yankee farm system and the prospects with the Trenton Thunder in particular. Good stuff!

Given the number of top pitching prospects in Double-A, a lot of the discussion with pitching instructor, Contreras centered around the pitching standouts so far this season:

David Phelps - 6-0; 2.04 ERA; 84 K; 0.97 WHIP at Trenton

“David Phelps, really good. He’s advanced. He’s got pitches. His curveball…I just watched his bullpen, and his curveball’s better. I know he attacks the zone. He throws a four-seam, two-seam, slider. He’s got the pitches to pitch in the big leagues, the endurance. He’s got the game. He’s got a lot of things going for him. He’s just got to go out across those white lines and continue to pitch and he’ll do really well.”

Andrew Brackman - 5-1; 2.81 ERA, 46 K in last 8 starts at Tampa before promotion

“I saw him in Tampa and of course I saw him here last night. The biggest part of it is his confidence level. Yeah, we made some adjustments with his delivery to allow him to be able to throw more strikes than what he did in Charleston. But the other part of it, is that was his first year coming off the operation. Not having pitched, we don’t know how he really felt with his arm. His delivery faltered. But the last month or so in Charleston, he started putting it together. He’s done really well and he’s on his way, no doubt.”

Graham Stoneburner - 4-3; 1.93 ERA; 39 K; 0.76 WHIP at Tampa

“Stoneburner has pitched really, really well. But he’s made one jump already, he’s gone from Charleston to Tampa. I believe he should stay there. Maybe September or the in the playoffs, if Tampa’s not (in), maybe you see him. “

Hector Noesi - 4-1; 2.20 ERA; 44 K; 1.00 WHIP at Trenton since promotion

“Well, you see, with Noesi, there’s not much to work with with Noesi. What he’s learning is his slider. He can command the fastball, he can command the sinker, he’s got the curveball. Still, he’s got to get a little better with his curveball. But, he’s got the changeup. His delivery’s solid and he can command both sides of the plate. We’ll see what happens.”

Pat Venditte - 1.98 ERA; 2 saves; 51 K; 0.90 WHIP at Tampa

“He gets people out. When it gets to this level, he’s got to get people out. It’s not about he can throw both hands, that’ll put another thousand people in the stands, it’s about getting people out.”

And here are comments from Mark Newman, the Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations for the New York Yankees about some of the positional players at Trenton.

David Adams - .309 Avg.; 32 RBI 5 SB at Trenton (On DL since May 22nd)

“It’s going to take a while, it’s going to take another couple weeks. He’s not around the corner in terms of re-joining the Trenton club.”

Brandon Laird - .293 Avg; 19 HR; 77 RBI at Trenton

“19 home runs in the first half, yeah. No one had that number.”

“Well, he’s made huge strides defensively, which is a more subtle part of the game, but it’s really been a part of his progress. He’s improved as a hitter, but he’s made more improvement as a defender.”

“Well, we’ll try to create positional flexibility with him. But it’s still first and third. It would be nice to have what we call a corner utility guy, someone who can play third, someone who can play first, somebody who can DH and swing the bat. That’s a role that’s important to us as we build our Major League club.”

When asked if he anticipated Laird staying at Trenton the rest of the year, he said:

“I don’t anticipate that far into the future. You never know.”

Newman's assessment of the system and recent successes, I thought were stated very well:

“We’ve got young players playing very well. Phil Hughes is 10-1, that’s big. Gardner is up there in on-base percentage, that’s big. Cervelli’s making contributions, Pena…Kevin Russo’s in a utility role up there, Colin Curtis is up there doing some nice stuff off the bench. Robby Cano’s one of the best players in the game. They’ve all been in Trenton in the last two, three, four years. You’ve got Ian, Austin Jackson, Joba, so yeah, that’s a pretty good run. Yes, we’ve traded some this winter, some of them I just mentioned. Phil Coke’s another one. So, we’ve got to re-stock a little bit, but we’ve got some good players here, so we feel good. Our scouts, both domestic and internationally, have really done a nice job.”

1963 - Chicago White Sox starter Ray Herbert allows 5 Yankee singles to beat the Yankees, by a score of 6-0, and to give the White Sox a virtual tie for 1st place. The White Sox assaulted Yankees young pitching star Jim Bouton (10-3) for all their runs in the 1st five innings.

Rickey, acquired last February from the Browns, is pressed into service despite having a bad shoulder because of the injury to starting C Red Kleinow. Rickey's 1st throw to 2B ends up in RF and the subsequent tosses are not much better. He almost nips Jim Delahanty on a steal of 3B. After this 1-game experiment, Joe returns to the outfield. Yankees Manager Casey Stengel was hoping the new position for Joe DiMaggio would extend his playing career with the Yankees. The Expos sent players to be named later and P Jake Westbrook to the Yankees for P Hideki Irabu. The Expos will send P Ted Lilly on March 17, 2000 and P Christian Parker on March 22, 2000 to the Yankees to complete the trade.

The win moves Boston ahead of 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers by 7 1/2 games with the Yankees now trailing by 8 games.
1980 - The MLB's largest crowd in 7 years (73,096) watches Tribe starter Wayne Garland 2-hit the Yankees 7-0 at Cleveland Stadium.
1996 - The New York Yankees signed Venezuelan OF Jackson Melian, who had just turned 16, to a contract for $1.6 million. His bonus is a record for Latino ball players. He never reaches the MLB as a player.

A-Rod and Torre Break The Ice

From George A. King III: Rodriguez, who refused to discuss Torre's impact on him during the four years they were together with the Yankees and didn't get together with Torre during the first two days at Dodger Stadium, approached Torre behind the batting cage while the Dodgers hit.

When Torre saw Rodriguez get close, he feigned jumping back but then the men embraced. A 30-second chat followed and Rodriguez went to talk to two fans in the seats by the Yankees' dugout.

"It was important to go there, it was the mature thing to do," Rodriguez said after the Yankees' 8-6 come-from-behind, 10-inning victory last night. "I didn't want to let things linger. I wanted to build on what I have been building on for the last two years, to do the right thing. I didn't want to let it linger, you don't know when the next time I will see Joe."Smart move by A-Rod, if anything, just to shut people up about it. Plus, it's obviously always better to leave any kind of situation on good terms rather than bad.

Five Prospects Revisited

You can read the original post, from 28 April 2010, here.

David Adams - 23, 2B, Trenton
.309/.393/.507, 3 HR, 32 RBI, 5 SB (2 CS)

Prior to going down for several weeks with a sprained right ankle, Adams was raking for the Thunder - at the time of his injury, Adams was third in the Eastern League in RBI. It's also worth noting that Adams' defense has continued to improve (he's flashed greater range and had yet to make an error in 2010), which scouts had initially perceived as a possible issue.

Eduardo Nunez - 23, SS, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
.320/.356/.416, 2 HR, 35 RBI, 14 SB (3 CS)

The enigmatic shortstop is having his best all-around season thus far, demonstrating the sort of glovework the Yankees were expecting upon signing him out of the Dominican Republic while swinging a hot bat. His dramatic improvement across the board is noteworthy, but his major league prospects appear to be fuzzy for the time being.

Jose Ramirez - 20, RHP, Charleston
70.2 IP, 61 H, 23 BB, 65 K, 3.44 ERA, 0.89 G/F

While he's cooled a bit since his hot start, Ramirez's numbers remain impressive. I am particularly encourage about the increase in groundball outs as the season's progressed, as his career numbers indicate some severe flyball tendencies. If this positive trend can continue, Ramirez's ceiling could be raised significantly.

Graham Stoneburner - 22, RHP, Charleston/Tampa
Charleston - 39.0 IP, 27 H, 10 BB, 44 K, 2.08 ERA, 2.67 G/F
Tampa - 42.0 IP, 21 H, 11 BB, 39 K, 1.93 ERA, 1.69 G/F

Stoneburner has been nothing short of dominant in 2010, demonstrating solid control, swing-and-miss stuff, and excellent groundball numbers. While a bit of regression is due (his BABIP is about fifty points lower than expected), it's difficult to look at his numbers and not be impressed… hell, his numbers may be even more impressive than his name.

Adam Warren - 22, RHP, Tampa
63.0 IP, 60 H, 14 BB, 48 K, 2.86 ERA, 3.30 G/F

No - the 3.30 G/F is not a typo. While Warren's offspeed stuff remains in its infancy, his ability to generate groundball outs is excellent - particularly when coupled with his stellar control. The strikeout numbers are a bit lower than I expected, but I cannot help but think that that will improve, along with his slider and change-up.

Pedroia Heads To DL With Broken Foot

From SI.com:The All-Star second baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a broken left foot and it's unclear how long he might be sidelined or whether he could need surgery. He said inserting a pin into the foot is an option to help him heal more quickly, but Pedroia will know more after he is examined by team doctors back home on Monday.

...

"There's nothing we can do. The level of my disappointment is not going to make him heal quicker," Francona said. "He came in here today and asked who was going to play second. I've never seen a kid care as much about a team. He's as legit a player and a person as they come."

The injury is a major blow to the Red Sox, who began the day three games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East. Pedroia joins Josh Beckett, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Lowell and Jeremy Hermida on Boston's disabled list.

Pedroia was on crutches Saturday and wearing a walking boot. Francona knew the injury could be more serious just because Pedroia was unable to put pressure on the foot late Friday. The manager said the Red Sox sent scans of his foot to their team doctors, and the two-time All-Star will be examined by orthopedist Dr. George Theodore on Monday.

"I don't know that we have a parameter yet," Francona said, acknowledging surgery could be necessary. "When we know the severity of it, then we'll have some parameters. I think anybody that's been around Dustin would bet on him being quicker than anybody humanly possible healing. But they don't know the extent of it yet."Oh well, sucks for Boston.

Burnett's Disastrous Month Continues, Yanks Fall 9-4

(A.J. takes out his frustrations on a bucket of gum.)

Final123456789RHEN.Y. Yankees301000000481L.A. Dodgers «20320020x9111WP: H. Kuroda (7-5) LP: A. Burnett (6-7)

Congratulations A.J., you just had the worst month in Yankees history. His 11.35 ERA this June was the worst in by any Yankees pitcher with at least five starts in a month. Honestly, I may just stop watching games he starts until he gets back on track, because it's becoming a frustrating waste of time.

Last night, he was handed a 3-0 lead before he even took the mound, thanks to a first-inning three-run homer by Mark Teixeira. But it didn't take too long for Burnett to begin giving those runs back. Two of the first three batters he faced singled, Manny Ramirez was next and drove in a run with a ground-rule double, and then James Loney drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

Both teams went down scoreless in the second, and then the Yankees extended their lead back up to two with a run in the third. That would be the last lead of the game for the Yankees, because Burnett, who had a decent second inning, completely fell apart.

Here's the first five batters of the bottom of the third: 5-pitch walk, single, 5-pitch walk, single, 5-pitch walk. He finally recorded an out, actually two, when Russel Martin grounded into a double play, but the lead run would score on the play and it was 5-4 Dodgers.

The Yankees had a chanced to score in the next inning, when they got two on with one out. Nick Swisher reached when Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda threw a wild pitch on a swinging strike three, and Brett Gardner singled a couple batters later to put men on the corners with the pitcher's spot coming up.

Burnett had already given up five runs so I figured Girardi would hand this one over to the pen, even after just three, and bring up a pinch hitter. Well, he didn't, Burnett bunted Gardner over to second, and Derek Jeter struck out to end the inning, and worst of all, Burnett was coming out for the fourth.

Burnett allowed the first two batters to reach; Furcal on a bunt single and Kemp on a walk, and that would be the end of his day. So by trying to get an extra inning or two out of Burnett not only led to giving away a free out with runners on the corners, but it meant that Boone Logan now has to come in the game in the fourth, but instead of nobody on, they're are now two on with nobody out. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's easier for a pitcher to come out of the pen to start an inning rather than in the middle of a rally.

Logan not only allowed both of the inherited runners to score, but one of his own and the Dodgers extended their lead to 7-4.

Those two runners made it six runs allowed on six hits and six walks for Burnett in just 3

Rosenthal: O's Want A SS For Wigginton

From Ken Rosenthal:Orioles won't move Wigginton unless they get back young SS. It's a self-defeating stance: No team will trade young SS for Wigginton. My view is that the Yankees, since they have Jeter, can afford to part with a young SS. But that doesn't mean it's something they should do. I agree with Rosenthal when he says says that no team will actually give the Orioles what they're asking for. So the Yankees would be wise to stay away until the price drops, which it eventually will when the O's realize nobody will give them what they want.

Facing Torre Brings Back Old Memories For Yanks

Bryan Hoch wrote this nice piece about how the Yankees feel about facing their former manager and how it's bringing back some fond memories. There are a lot of good quotes in the article, but here are a few from the core fore:

Brackman Gets a Promotion

Josh Norris is reporting that RHP Andrew Brackman has been promoted from High-A Tampa to Double-A Trenton. In 12 starts for Tampa this year he went 5-4, with a 5.10 ERA, but has posted a 2.84 ERA over his last eight starts.

For more on Brackman, check out this post that Domenic wrote last week.

Pregame notes: Familiar questions

Surrounded by reports in the visiting clubhouse here in Phoenix, Phil Hughes was answering all of the questions you’d expect about his innings limit and his turn being skipped. When someone asked whether he knew exactly how many innings he would be allowed to pitch, Joba Chamberlain leaned over the crowd.

“High five,” he said, holding his left hand up to Hughes. “Someone else gets the question. Awesome!”

No, Hughes doesn’t know exactly how many innings he’s allowed to throw this season. He hasn’t asked. The only thing he asked when the Yankees told him his turn was being skipped this week was whether he’d have to miss another start before the all-star break. The Yankees assured him that, for now, it’s only this start that’s being skipped.

“I assume there are going to be some scenarios where something needs to happen in the second half,” Hughes said. “I can’t imagine one start prior to the all-star break being the breaking point of my innings limit. I didn’t ask about the second half because it’s so far off.”

Girardi said the Yankees are hoping to avoid last year’s Joba Chamberlain situation. The early season injury to Chien-Ming Wang kept the Yankees from being able to skip Chamberlain early last season, and they were forced to give him those strange three- and four-inning starts late in the year.

“Obviously you’d love to be able to say in spring training, here’s the plan, here’s exactly what we’re going to do,” Girardi said. “You’re going to average 6.1 innings per game and you’re going to get to your innings limitation on September 30. But the one thing I’m not going to do is I’m not going to jeopardize the game that he’s pitching in because of his innings limitation. If he’s dealing through six and it’s a 2-1 game, I’m not taking him out because of his innings limitation. We’ll worry about (later) and we’ll adjust.

Lopez vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 10:09 p.m. / YES Network and ESPN

UMPIRES: HP John Hirshbeck, 1B Wally Bell, 2B James Hoye, 3B Laz Diaz

WEATHER: It’s really, really hot outside. But the roof is closed so it feels nice at the park.

NOT A GOOD MEMORY: Luis Gonzalez, Matt Williams and Mark Grace threw out the first pitch. All three played on the 2001 Diamondbacks team that beat the Yankees in the World Series.

FAMILIAR NUMBER: Colin Curtis is the latest Yankee given jersey No. 27.

DIAMONDBACKS MOVE: Before the game, the D-Backs called up outfielder Cole Gillespie from Triple-A and optioned infielder Ryan Roberts. Gillespie was hitting .289 with four triples and four home runs in Triple-A.

UPDATE, 10:22 p.m.: After two quick outs A.J. Burnett is laboring a little bit here in the first inning. Justin Upton went deep to center field — really deep to center field — and now he’s allowed back to back singles… And before I could finish that sentence, Adam LaRoche hit a three-run bomb. Four runs, all with two outs, and it’s a 4-0 Diamondbacks lead.

UPDATE, 10:26 p.m.: Now it’s gotten ugly. Ryan Reynolds just took Burnett deep. It’s 5-0 Diamondbacks. That’s the fourth time the D-Backs have gone back-to-back this season. Reynold and LaRoche have gone back to back three times.

UPDATE, 10:35 p.m.: Well that’s finally over. Burnett struck out the pitcher to strand a double. Thank goodness for a National League lineup.

UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.: Is there any way to just let A.J. Burnett get the first two outs of every inning, then send someone else in for the third out? It’s now 6-0 Arizona on a two-out RBI double.

UPDATE, 10:59 p.m.: The Yankees have gotten into the two-out scoring thing. A two-out RBI triple by Nick Swisher has scored Brett Gardner and put the Yankees on the board, 6-1.

UPDATE, 11:26 p.m.: Two outs. Bases empty. The Diamondbacks turned it into a run. This is insane. It’s 7-1 Diamondbacks and every D-Backs run has scored in an inning that was two outs, bases empty.

UPDATE, 11:34 p.m.: Colin Curtis is making his major league debut pinch hitting for A.J. Burnett in the fifth inning. Burnett’s line: 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

UPDATE, 11:43 p.m.: Chad Guadin is now pitching (and batting ninth). And some guy just proposed on the big screen. He got a yes. So, you know, I guess that’s good news.

UPDATE, 11:55 p.m.: A foul ball into the press box just hit off the official scorer’s hands and bounced out into the crowd. He literally announced to the press box that he was declaring an error on himself. “It hit my hand,” he said.

UPDATE, 12:00 a.m.: The heart of the Yankees order just did something! Lead-off single by Teixeira and an RBI double by Rodriguez. It’s now 7-2 and this place is loud.

UPDATE, 12:02 p.m.: Add a hard-hit sac fly by Posada and it’s now 7-3. Still a long way to go, but the Yankees are making a little bit of noise.

UPDATE, 12:08 p.m.: I can’t imagine Chad Guadin trying to hit Upton in that situation, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see retaliation from the D-Backs.

UPDATE, 12:15 p.m.: Chad Huffman is now pinch hitting for Gaudin after a bunt single by 3-for-3 Brett Gardner.

UPDATE, 12:20 p.m.: A rare showing of frustration from Mark Teixeira who looked like he was going to break his bat over his knee after popping out with runners at the corners. He instead just slammed the bat flat to the ground. It’s still 7-3. Chan Ho Park in to pitch.

Burnett takes fourth straight loss

 Email This Post

A.J. Burnett has made four starts this month. He’s lost all four. Tonight he allowed seven runs, all of them coming after Burnett had two outs and the bases empty. The Yankees offense couldn’t keep up and lost 10-4. The D-Backs have been a bad team this season, but they’ve done one thing really well: They rank third in the major leagues in home runs. Justin Upton, Mark Reynolds and Adam LaRoche each homered in a five-run first inning, then Upton hit a three-run shot off Chan Ho Park in the eighth.

Phil Hughes to be skipped over in the rotation

This just in from Chad Jennings of the LoHud Yankees Blog:

Phil Hughes will have his next start skipped. The move is strictly to cut back on his innings.

He will make three more starts, not four, before the all-star break.

Update: 7:10PM ET: Sweeny Murti of WFAN: Have off days Thu and Mon. Hughes next vs Seattle Tue June 29.

We all knew this was going to happen at some time this season, and it was just a matter of when. He probably would’ve been fine during the regular season, but they want him to be able to help them out deep into October.

Dellin Betances Back on the Mound, Turning Heads

If you're looking for the best pitching prospects in the Yankee farm system this year, High-A Tampa would be the best place to start. Already boasting one promotion to Double-A with the recent call up of Hector Noesi to Trenton, Tampa is the home for a number of legitimate starter prospects. The rotation includes Adam Warren (6-4, 2.44 ERA, picked to start the FSL All Star Game); Graham Stoneburner (4-2, 2.25 ERA, a recent promotion from Charleston); Andrew Brackman (5-0, 2.11 ERA in last 7 games); and lets not forget potentially the best of them all, Manny Banuelos who has not pitched this year due to an appendectomy.

Recently joining this group of pitching prospects is Dellin Betances, a top pitching prospect who just came back from ligament reinforcement surgery performed on his elbow a year ago. A home grown talent, Betances was selected out of Grand Street Campus High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. in the eighth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He had elbow problems in 2007 pitching only 25 innings, and then again in 2009 with Tampa when he was shut down for surgery. His best year was 2008 in Charleston, when he was 9-4 with a 3.67 ERA. He ranked second that year amongst all Yankee minor league pitchers with 141 strikeouts and was ranked by Baseball America as the fifth-best prospect in the Yankees' organization.

Now that he has rejoined Tampa, the 6-foot-8 Betances and fellow top pitching prospect, 6-foot-10 Andrew Brackman, form what they are calling the "Twin Towers" because of their size and potential according to Rob Abruzzese of the Bronx Baseball Daily. When the Yankees drafted these two, they had very high hopes for each and were expecting that they would move through the farm system quickly. Instead due to control problems and inconsistency by Brackman, and injuries to Betances, that progression has been a lot slower than expected.

Lately, Brackman has been very good, and in his first 2 appearances so far, Betances has earned a 1-0 record and 0.71 ERA. He has pitched 12 innings, striking out 13 and walking only 1. I am impressed the most with the number of walks given the long layoff due to injury. He has looked sharp so far and has always had great stuff. Reports that he was throwing at 95 MPH and topped at 97 MPH since returning, add to the indications that he is fully recovered. It's way too early to tell if he is ready to turn his career around but he appears to be on his way back from injury and possibly headed back towards the top of the pitching prospect list.

If Brackman and Betances continue their improvement and stay healthy, the Yankees could have regained two top pitching prospects which just a short while ago they were thinking of giving up on.
