2010 New York Yankees Payroll

Jeff Euston over at Cot’s Baseball Contracts helped me crunch some numbers about the 2010 New York Yankees.

The New York Yankees currently rank #1 with the highest payroll in MLB, which is pretty much obvious by now. The 2010 New York Yankees have an Opening Day payroll of $206.3 million, which is a 2% increase over last year. Their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox, ranked #2 with a $162.4 million payroll and had a 33% increase over last season. Throughout Major League Baseball, 47% of teams lowered their payrolls, but the Yankees and Red Sox were not among them. The Yanks have a $213,359,389 million payroll if you are counting minor-leaguers with major league contracts (Miranda & Brackman) and others playing elsewhere (Kei Igawa, Chad Gaudin & Melky Cabrera)

Opening Day payrolls for 25-man roster (salaries plus pro-rated signing bonuses):

2010: $206.3 2009: $201,449,189 2008: $209,081,577

2010 Payroll Obligations: $4,000,000 (Kei Igawa) (plus $4M in 2011), $737,500 (Chad Gaudin), $500,000 (Melky Cabrera)

According to the Annual Review Of Global Sports Salaries, the New York Yankees have the highest paid per player average in all of sports. (1. New York Yankees (MLB): $6,977,080, 2. Real Madrid (La Liga): $6,321,059, 3. Barcelona (La Liga): $6,979,447)
