State of the Yanks
It’s no secret that the Yanks have looked like trash over the past week or so. The team has dropped two in a row (TO THE METS!!!!), five of six and six of eight overall.
However, the team still boasts an impressive 26-18 record (5 1/2 back of the Rays), showed signs of life late in games and posted 28 runs over their last six setbacks. In five of their last six losses they have brought the tying/winning runs to the plate in the ninth but failed to capitalize. In the one loss that they failed to get the tying run up the team still banged out four runs in the ninth. I know, a day late and a buck short but it is still impressive for a team that’s been bamboozled with injuries and has unproductive stars.
A major factor for this recent losing has definitely been the pitching. The bullpen has looked like shit and the rotation is not getting the job done as of late:
CC: 12 ER over 18 IP in his last three starts (0-2).AJ: 16 ER over 17 2/3 IP in his last three starts (0-2).Pettitte: Only had one real clunker, Thursday against Tampa Bay (the best team in the Majors). The veteran lefty was tagged for six ER over five IP to take the loss, his only on the year. He still has a 2.68 ERA, good for sixth in the AL.Javy: I’ll spare you the gory details of his early-season struggles, but he HAS looked solid over his last three appearances (granted one was just four pitches). The guy everyone loves to hate has given up just two ER over his last 13 1/3 IP. I’ll take that from a guy who had everyone and their sister calling for his head on a stick a week ago. I just fear this finger booboo might be worse than the team is letting on.Hughes: The future ace has surrendered nine ER over 10 2/3 IP in his last two starts to see his ERA “balloon” to 2.72, which is still eighth best in the AL.Elsewhere on the bed-shit circuit:
Tex has just 3 hits in his last six games (25 at-bats) and is batting .209/.327/.378/.705 on the season. I have faith that Marky Mark will turn it around, but when does a small sample size turn into a large enough sample to warrant pant pooing?Gardner is 1 for his last 18 (including a 0-for-13 showing against the Mets) with 1BB and 4K. GGBG is now putting up a .294/.372/.373/.745 line.A-Rod has two homers and six RBI in his last nine games. His line is .291/.375/.485/.860, which pales in comparison to his career .305/.389/.574/.963 average. He also went 0-for-4 Sunday and had a HUGE whiff batting as the go-ahead run in the ninth inning against K-Rod to end the game.Cervelli is seven for his last 29 and saw his average drop 61 points to a still-phenomenal .354. Obviously starting seven games in seven days, nine games in 10 days and 15 games in 20 days will do that to a young guy’s average. He is still putting up great numbers for a player with 161 career at-bats (82 this season), but I’ve got a feeling his numbers will continue to decline as pitchers figure him out and the daily grind eventually gets to him.Injuries:
Posada is out 3-4 weeks with a hairline fracture in his right foot.Nick The Stick was just transferred to the 60-day DL (for the sake of roster moves) after undergoing surgery on his right wrist. He is expected to make a return sometime in July.Grandy is out with a strained left groin but could soon make a return to the team.Ace is out with a bulging disc in his back but also could return soon.Javy suffered a bruised right index finger on Friday against the Mets (after shutting them down) but is expected to start on Thursday. His bullpen session was moved back to Tuesday and we’ll get a decision if he starts Thursday after that.Thames was hurt after STEPPING ON HIS BAT after a hit, and has only pinch hit since then.On the bright side:
The team was 25-19 through 44 games last year (one game worse than 2010) and that campaign played out just fine.Grandy is doing well in the minors and could join the Yanks as early as Thursday.Aceves is making progress, but might still be hampered by his back.Thames was hurt after STEPPING ON HIS BAT after a hit, and has only pinch hit since then. How worried are you about the 2010 Yanks? Meh. They've had some bad luck but I'm confident they'll bounce back and start running shit again Splash (The only sound heard after my plunge from a tall bridge) I'm at a happy medium between the other two answersView ResultsView the Original article
Was getting rid of that dome REALLY a good idea?
The Yanks’ first trip to Target Field was a memorable one. It was the first rain-delayed (let alone suspended) game in the young stadium’s history.
The 0-0 affair was also forgettable for the Yanks offense. The first two innings saw two double plays, the Yanks had men on first and second with no outs in the fourth and failed to score, and Baker threw 50 pitches through five innings. Did the Yanks forget how to take pitches? Holy fuck.
However, AJ was wheeling and/or dealing. His pitch count was high (75 though five innings) but he gave up just three hits while fanning five and walking two. He looked shaky early on but managed to get out of jams with no damage as his breaking ball was breaking.
Tuesday’s game will resume at 4:05 (Minnesota time) and the regularly scheduled tilt will follow at 6:10 (again, Minnesota time) or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the prior game. No official word yet, but you have to figure that Mitre will take the hill when play resumes. Pettitte and Liriano are the scheduled starters for the second game.
There’s good news and bad news from the pitching front Wednesday:
The Good: Javy Vazquez’ bullpen session went well Tuesday and he will make his scheduled start on Thursday. The Bad: Aceves suffered a setback with the bulging disc in his back while working out in Tampa and will head back to New York for more tests.Share this post:RSS FeedTweet ThisShare on FaceBookDigg ItStumble Upon ThisReddit ShareYahoo! Exonerate-Rod
Perfect, he’s not.
It seems that Dallas Braden might be full of shit with regards to Moundgate after all.
Deadspin posted footage (via The Fleer Sticker Project) the other day from the 1971 Word Series that shows Don Buford running over Dock Ellis’ mound while on his way across the field. Apparently, when it happened, there was never any mention of “unwritten rules,” nobody made a big deal about it and Ellis (who might have been whacked out of his gourd) didn’t take offense and throw a hissy fit.
I wonder if Snaggletooth was made aware of Buford’s mortal sin. If he was, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that conversation.
It’s very interesting that during an old school game — in the World Series, nevertheless — this went unnoticed, but when A-Rod does it during a meaningless April game the shit hits the fan. I truly believe that if A-Rod wasn’t the antagonist here this story wouldn’t have been a story at all.
So where do we go from here? Was Braden making a mountain out of a molehill and attempting to prolong his “15 minutes of fame?” If so, does he owe A-Rod an apology? Did A-Rod, in fact, break an “unwritten rule?” I want some closure to this story.Share this post:RSS FeedTweet ThisShare on FaceBookDigg ItStumble Upon ThisReddit ShareYahoo! Share

Subway Series Preview: Yankees, Mets Try To Get Back on Track
Coming off three straight losses to division rivals, the Yankees must regain their focus for the circus that is the Subway Series.
The Bombers conclude a stretch of 17 games in as many days with three against the Mets at Citi Field in Queens.
New York's National League team got off to a hot start, winning eight in a row to climb into first place and finish April at 14-9, but when the calendar flipped to May, the Mets' began to go downhill.
They're now in last place in the NL East at 20-22 and are really struggling offensively, ranking 13th in the league in average (.246) and OPS (.705), and 14th in on-base percentage (.320).
The pitching, meanwhile, has kept the Mets afloat, and while it was better in April than in May, it does set up three evenly-matched pairings for this weekend.
Friday, May 21 - Javier Vazquez (2-4, 8.01) vs. Hisanori Takahashi (3-1, 3.12)
It took Vazquez one-third of an inning in relief on Monday to double his win total from his previous six starts.
After he finally pitched well during a seven-inning, two-run effort against the Tigers on May 12, the Yankees decided to pull him out of the rotation for nine days. I guess they were going with the successful Joba Chamberlain approach on that one.
Vazquez returns to the rotation on Friday versus the Mets, a team against which he is 9-8 with a 3.37 ERA in 23 starts. The right-hander has never pitched at Citi Field, but he was 4-4 with a 3.53 ERA in 11 outings at Shea Stadium.
This should be Vazquez's time to shine as he went 15-10 with a 2.87 mark dealing against mostly NL East opponents last year for the Braves, a stark contrast from his career 4.65 ERA in the American League.
But the Mets' roster hits .317 off the 33-year-old. Luis Castillo is 26-for-72 (.361), Alex Cora is 8-for-21 (.381), Gary Matthews Jr. is 6-for-10 (.600) and David Wright is 3-for-8 (.375).
Henry Blanco, however, is 4-for-20 (.200), Rod Barajas is 2-for-15 (.133) with five strikeouts, Jose Reyes is 3-for-13 (.231) and Jason Bay is 2-for-12 (.167) with five K's.
Takahashi has the daunting task of making his first Major League start against the Bronx Bombers. The left-hander has made 15 relief appearances during his rookie season, yielding 22 hits with 14 walks and 33 strikeouts in 26 innings.
Saturday, May 22 - Phil Hughes (5-0, 2.25) vs. Mike Pelfrey (5-1, 3.02)
Hughes had his first slip-up of the year in his last outing, when he surrendered five runs in five innings against the Red Sox. He still ranks third in the AL in ERA and WHIP (0.98), and hasn't lost yet.
The right-hander has pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings versus the Mets in his career. Bay is 1-for-6 (.167) off him with four strikeouts and Matthews is 1-for-4 (.250) with a double, while Barajas, Cora and Jeff Francoeur are a combined 0-for-4.
Like Hughes, Pelfrey has been a nice surprise for the Mets this season, but he has come back down to earth of late. After a 4-0, 0.69 April, the righty won for the first time in May his last time out, when he yielded two runs over 7 2/3 innings at Atlanta.
The 26-year-old is dealing with some shoulder stiffness and should face a stiff test when he goes up against the Yankees, a team he has faced twice, posting a 1-1 record and a 5.40 ERA.
Mark Teixeira is 4-for-13 (.308) off Pelfrey, while Alex Rodriguez (2-for-4), Derek Jeter (1-for-3), Brett Gardner (2-for-3) and Ramiro Pena (2-for-2, two doubles) have all had success in limited action.
However, Randy Winn is 1-for-10 (.100) with three strikeouts, Robinson Cano is 1-for-6 (.167) and Francisco Cervelli is 0-for-3.
Sunday, May 23 - CC Sabathia (4-2, 3.43) vs. Johan Santana (3-2, 3.72)
The marquee pitching matchup of the series comes Sunday night. After his worst start of the year - a six-run, six-inning effort at Detroit - Sabathia rebounded to hold the Red Sox to just one run on four hits over seven frames in his last outing.
The big lefty has pitched very well in two career starts against the Mets, winning both games with a 1.20 ERA. Both of those outings came on the road with one at Shea and the other at Citi.
Matthews is 5-for-26 (.192) with 10 strikeouts versus Sabathia, Castillo is 4-for-19 (.211), Bay is 1-for-9 (.111) and Cora and Wright are each 0-for-3.
The only Met who seems to give the southpaw problems is Barajas, who is 8-for-19 (.421) with three homers.
Like Pelfrey, Santana had a much better April (3-1, 2.08) than May (0-1, 5.68), but those latter stats are skewed by the 10 runs he gave up to the Phillies, who may or may not have been using binoculars to steal signs.
The Venezuelan is 4-2 with a 4.40 ERA in 11 games (eight starts) against the Yankees. Marcus Thames should get the day off as he is 4-for-34 (.118) with 13 strikeouts against Santana. The lefty also dominates Teixeira (6-for-26, .231), A-Rod (5-for-23, .217), Winn (4-for-17, .235) and Nick Swisher (3-for-15, .200).
Jeter (11-for-26, .423) and Cano (7-for-17, .412), however, have had success.

El Crapitan?
Let me preface this post by saying this: I have nothing against Derek Jeter. I think he is a great ballplayer that has helped bring the Yankees five World Series championships. This is not meant to be a knock on him; I (kind of) don’t think he is over-the-hill, washed up or anything of the sort. I am simply attempting to figure out what is going wrong for him in 2010.
What is wrong with Derek Jeter this season? Has his age (36 in June) caught up with him? Can he no longer connect on certain pitches? Does he need glasses, because he used to wear them. Was that hit-by-pitch from Justin Verlander (and the other two this season) more troubling than he let on? Is Minka Kelly and their looming marriage causing this decline in production?
I think one of the problems could be that he is swinging at the first pitch too often and hacking away at stuff outside the strike zone. Last night, for example, he swung at the first pitch in the first inning and grounded to short. Then, in the second stanza, he took seven pitches but also swung at ball four twice (something he also did on Monday night and countless other times this season) before striking out. He fanned again in the fifth, but did so on seven pitches. He drew a seven-pitch walk in the sixth frame, and finally connected on a huge five-pitch single in the eighth. Strikeouts aren’t that big of a deal, per se, when you’re driving the pitch count up. However, when you’re seeing an average of 3.59 pitches per plate appearance whiffs are kind of a nuisance.
Let’s look at some of DJ’s numbers through 38 games. In 2010, Jeter is hitting .268/.315/.393/.708, which is way down compared to his career .316/.387/.458/.844 line. Plus his 2010 BABIP (batting average on balls in play) is at a meager .289 compared to the robust .358 for his career. Plus this year’s BB% (5.0) is the lowest it’s ever been throughout his career. To put that in perspective, Robinson Cano has drawn three more walks (12) in 17 fewer at-bats (151) than Jeet. On the other hand, at the moment, Jeter’s K% (13.7) is also the lowest it’s been in his career but not too far away from that of his career mark (16.9), which, I guess, is a positive.
Not to further knock Jeter, but his May line reads .189/.268/.230/.498. Perhaps he’s the anti-Teixeira, as he went .330/.354/.521/.875 in April.
To make matters worse, Captain’s line drive percentage this year (14.4) is way down from his career mark (20.5) and 2010’s ground ball percentage (67.8) is way up from that of his career (56.2), both are the worst of his career. Plus, damn near all of his 2010 plate discipline stats are an abomination.
What does this all mean? Maybe he just needs more time and a larger sample size to produce better numbers, maybe a day off, or perhaps he needs to be moved from the leadoff spot. Could the speedy Brett Gardner and his dead-sexy .321/.399/.412/.811 with 17 stolen bases (caught once) take over at the top of the order? It’s something to think about, that’s for sure.
So what should the Yanks do about this slump? Are the critics right? Lest we forget Jeet also had kind of a slow start in 2009, but fought his way back to make a bid for the MVP award. So I say give him some more time and if he doesn’t pick it up by mid-to-late June then the team has a problem and should make some changes. I’ve got a feeling that he’ll step up and record his usual numbers by season’s end. He’d better, it is a contract year after all.Share this post:RSS FeedTweet ThisShare on FaceBookDigg ItStumble Upon ThisReddit ShareYahoo! Share

Lineup plus injury news
Some less-than-encouraging injury news out of the Bronx on Wednesday:
Swish Dog says his injured left biceps is a “one-more-day kind of thing” and he feels good but “there’s still something there.” He tried to take batting practice during Tuesday’s game in an effort to pinch hit, but felt he couldn’t go.Georgie went for an MRI on his foot Wednesday. No word on the results, but the (semi) good news is that Girardi said he would go to Posada before he went to Ramiro Pena if — God forbid — Cervelli got hurt.Nick The Stick is at The Stadium in an arm sling…The Yanks made a roster move, as they sent outfielder Greg Golson down and recalled pitcher Mark Melancon. Girardi says it was because, “We felt we needed the pitching more.” I guess having 13 pitchers outweighs having a baron bench and a bush-league outfield. Although Sergio Mitre won’t be available until Thursday, so it kind of makes sense.Remember that protest from Tuesday’s game? I’ve got a funny feeling it’s not going to go through. As for Wednesday’s lineup against the Rays:
Jeet SSGardner CFTex DHA-Rod 3BCano 2BCervelli CThames RFJuan Miranda 1BRandy Winn LFOn the bump is AJ, who will be opposed by Wade Davis. LET’S GO YANKS!!!!Share this post:RSS FeedTweet ThisShare on FaceBookDigg ItStumble Upon ThisReddit ShareYahoo! Share

Breaking News: Posada Out 3-4 Weeks
Chad Jennings is reporting that Jorge Posada is going to be out 3-4 weeks with a hair line fracture in his right foot. Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman do not know what they are going to do at the catcher position yet.
Posada sounded much more optimistic than his manager and GM: “It’s not going to take that long,” Posada said. “They can say whatever they want to say. I’ll be here before that.”
I hope so, but the last thing the Yankees need is for Posada to rush back and make the injury worse. Get better, then get back into the lineup.
Updates will come as more information becomes available.
Jesus Montero anyone? He has been slumping a bit, but has been hitting better of late. A call up may boost his confidence and he'd also have the opportunity to start working with Kevin Long. However, a move would have to be made to create a spot on the roster. Although that should be the case for any catcher the Yankees bring up.

Yanks Lose Game, Posada, As Problems Mount
Final123456789RHETampa Bay «10140004010152N.Y. Yankees0001010046121WP: W. Davis (4-3) LP: A. Burnett (4-2)
SV: J. Benoit (1)
After blowing two 5-0 leads to the Red Sox and then being embarrassed last night against the Rays, the Yankees fell to 4 games behind the Rays for first, and to make matters worse, Jorge Posada could miss a month with a hairline fracture in his foot.
Maybe, just maybe, it's time to start worrying a bit.
Last night's game was all about the starters. A.J. Burnett had nothing, allowing six runs on nine hits, walking four and struck out four over 6.2 innings. He struggled with command of his fastball, and at times--particularly the fourth inning--looked like he had no idea where the pitch was going. He also did a poor job holding runners on as the Rays were able to steal six bases in the game.
On the night he threw 116 pitches, 67 for strikes. Here's what Burnett said about his start:

In other news, the X-Rays on Marcus Thames are negative
As some of you guys probably just heard during the Yankees press conference, Joe Girardi stated that the x-rays on Marcus Thames left ankle were negative. Yanks May Call Up Melancon To Help Bullpen Issues
Chad Jennings is reporting that the Yankees will likely call Mark Melancon up from Triple-A Scranton, but they're waiting to see if tonight's game can be played before they make the move. He also says that Boone Logan or Greg Golson could be heading to Scranton to make room on the roster.
With the exception of Sunday's game, both Joba and Mo have looked good at the end of games, the problem is getting there. The loss of Alfredo Aceves has really started to take its toll on the pen. David Robertson has been better lately, but still isn't the same pitcher we saw most of last year. He's walking 6.17 batters per nine compared to 4.74 last year, and his homers are way up, from 0.82 per nine last year to 2.31 so far in 2010. He also has relied on his fastball a lot more this year, throwing it 78.1% of the time, compared to 68.7% last year. Batters may be sitting on his fastball, and that could be causing the jump in homers.
Besides Robertson's struggles, the Yankees have no idea what they have in Chan Ho Park. He had a couple good outings before hitting the DL, but overall has been a disappointment. And Damaso Marte and Logan have both been ineffective.
The bullpen is an issue right now, there's no doubt that. But it has been like this in each of Joe Girardi's first two seasons as manager and each time he found a formula that eventually worked. Hopefully, Melancon can pitch well at this level and help the pen find itself. Other pitchers to keep your eye on are Jonathan Albaladejo and lefty Royce Ring, who have both pitched well for Scranton this year.

Granderson Takes Fly Balls For First Time Since Injury
Sunday, Curtis Granderson shagged some fly balls in the outfield. He chase balls down and changed directions, both major steps in his recovery, all without any problems. He did the same prior to yesterday's game, along with some BP, and again reported no problems.
"Everything felt good," Granderson said. "The endurance is just not there."

Good News For Swisher
According to Chad Jennings, Nick Swisher swung lefty off a tee today and felt fine. “The trainer’s got magic hands, man,” Swisher said.Good news for the Yanks, who could really use his bat back in the lineup.
In other injury news regarding guys named Nick, Nick Johnson had surgery on his wrist today. He won't even be able to swing a bat for the next 4-6 weeks.

No Pie Tonight, Just Embarrassment and Shame
Final123456789RHEBoston «0000010427102N.Y. Yankees020120001682WP: D. Bard (1-1) LP: M. Rivera (0-1)
SV: J. Papelbon (10)
The Yankees came close to recapturing the 9th inning magic they showed the night before when they put the tying run on third with one out in the ninth, but fell short and dropped a heart-breaker to the Red Sox 7-6. It was a terrible loss for the Yankees, who, for the second night in a row, blew a 5-0 lead to Boston on their home field.
Most Yankees fans would say the first seven innings of this game went about as well as they could have hoped. CC Sabathia wasn't at his best, but he was still able to hold the Red Sox to just a run on four hits over seven innings. He walked three (along with five K's), had command issues most of the night, and threw just 66 of his 112 pitches for strikes. The only run Boston scored of the left-hander came in the sixth on a solo homer by Kevin Youkilis.
By that time in the game the Yankees had already built up a 5-0 lead and knocked Red Sox starter Josh Beckett out of the game. Beckett gave up all five runs on five hits, walked three and struck out six as his struggles against the Yankees (and everyone else so far this year) continue. Only three of the runs were earned thanks to an error by Marco Scutaro that led to the Yankees first two runs in the second. Juan Miranda hit his first home run of the year to make it 3-0 in the fourth. Robinson Cano made it 5-0 with a two-run double in the fifth. The hit that would knock Beckett out of the game, and cause a little controversy in the process.
After the double, Boston pitching coach John Farrell made a trip to the mound. After talking to Beckett he signaled for a reliever, and said that Beckett was leaving the game because he was injured and Manny Delcarmen, who was headed into the game, was then allowed to throw as many warmup pitches as he needed. This didn't sit well with Joe Girardi. He felt that because Farrell made the call for the reliever before announcing Beckett's injury, Delcarmen should have only been allowed the eight warmup pitches normally given to relievers coming into a game. Because of all this Girardi played the rest of the game under protest. I'd be shocked if the league did anything, but at least he's making his point... I guess.
With the Yankees still winning 5-1 in the 8th it was time for Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera to get the last six outs, but for the second time in three games they failed to get the job done.
Marco Scutaro led off the 8th with a slow grounder to third, Alex Rodriguez came up with the ball, but threw it wide of first and pulled Mark Teixeira off the base allowing Scutaro to reach. Things quickly went downhill from there. Joba allowed a single to Dustin Pedroia, an RBI double to J.D. Drew, and a cheap two-run bloop single to Youkilis that and just like that it was a one run game. Joba finally got an out when he retired Victor Martinez on a ground out to Cano, but Youkilis advanced on the play. David Ortiz then tied the game when he launched a ball off the wall in right, but because he thought the ball was out and didn't run out of the box, the Yankees got him at second. Joba then retired Adrian Beltre, but as they say, the damage had already been done.
Joba didn't walk anyone, but it seemed that he was behind every hitter and didn't have command or life on his fastball. Just 17 of his 31 pitches were strikes, and after looking so good for the first part of the season is slowly becoming another question mark in an already unstable bullpen.
The Yankees got put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the inning, but Teixeira flew out to right to end the inning.
Mo came in for the ninth and like Joba, didn't have his best command and was let down by his defense. With a runner on first and one out Scutaro hit a shallow fly ball to right. Marcus Thames and Robinson Cano converged on the ball, Thames called for it, and missed it completely. The ball bounced off his foot and trickled away from him and both runners were safe. Like Kenny Singleton said during the broadcast, when you call for the ball you have to make the catch, and in a span of 24 hour Thames went from hero to goat.
Dustin Pedroia grounded out to first to put runners on second and third with two out for Jeremy Hermida. After working the count to 2-2 Hermida deposited Mo's cutter over the head of Randy Winn in left for a two-run double. Winn was way too shallow on the play, but even if he was positioned normally I don't think he would have tracked it down. Either way, it was 7-5 Sox and the Yankees had three outs left.
The Yankees did make it interesting in the bottom of the inning thanks to some more sloppy play. Marco Scutaro, who for some reason was connected with every error in the game, allowed a ground ball by A-Rod to get under his glove. After Rodriguez took second on defensive indifference, Cano cut the lead to one with an RBI double. More importantly the tying run was in scoring position with nobody out.
Francisco Cervelli was up and it was decision time for Girardi: Do you allowed Cervelli to swing away or do you have him bunt Cano over to third? He went with the bunt and Cervelli got the job done. I can't blame him for going for the bunt, but there is certainly an argument to be made that he should have let Cervelli swing away. A ground ball or deep fly ball could also get the job done, he's been great with RISP this year, and the Yankees didn't exactly have Murderer's Row coming up behind him. Either way, the Yankees had the tying run on third with one out and Thames, Miranda and Winn due up.
Thames was the Yankees best chance, but he drew a walk and Ramiro Pena came in to pitch run. Pena was running on the 1-1 pitch to Miranda, and looked like he had the base stolen, but Miranda swung at the pitch and hit a grounder back to Papelbon who threw him out at first. The Yankees were down to their final out and it was up to Randy Winn. He put up a good fight, working the count full and fouling off several tough pitches, but on the eighth pitch of the at-bat he couldn't catch up to a 94 mph fastball and struck out swinging to end the game.
It was a sloppy and embarrassing loss for the Yankees and even if they had pulled it out this game still would have been a disappointment. Blowing a five-run lead one night is one thing, but two nights in a row in your home ballpark is unacceptable. The struggles of the Yankees pen is also becoming a major concern. Besides that, the Yankees lineup wasted several opportunities to blow this game open. Their best chance came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out, but Brett Gardner grounded into a force out at home, and Teixeira popped out to third to end the inning. For the game the Yankees left 12 men on base and went just 3-for-15 with RISP.
Things aren't going to get any easier for the Yanks who now host the first place Rays for a short two-game series before starting interleague play. A.J. Burnett will start for the Yankees tomorrow, with Wade Davis going for the Rays. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES and ESPN.

HUGE homestand for the Yanks
I apologize for the lack of posts here at YanksGoYard over the past couple of days, but I’ve been busy with some family stuff. To the few of you who actually read this site and care, I’ll try not to slack off again. Again, my sincerest apologies…now on to the Yanks:
Coming off a disappointing seven-game road trip (3-4), the Yanks head home for a pivotal seven-game homestand featuring three against the Twinkies, two against the Red Cox and two against the Rays. The Bombers are two games behind the Rays for the lead in the AL East and desperately need some wins, having lost four of their last five.
My prediction is that the Yanks will finish 4-3 after taking two of three from the Twins (who come in with an identical 22-12 record as the Yanks) and splitting the other two series. I’d consider 4-3 a victory given the injury bug floating around the Bronx right now.
Anyway, here are the pitching match-ups for the weekend set:
Friday: AJ vs. Scott BakerSaturday (I’ll be at this game!!!!): Pettitte vs. Francisco LirianoSunday: TBA vs. Nick BlackburnHopefully AJ can bounce back from that atrocious performance at Fenway. He should have his hands full with a Twins team that is second (behind the Yanks!!!) in all of MLB in OBP and first in batting average…Pettitte will take the mound for the first time since May 5th. He claims his left elbow is fine, and I hope he’s right. The Yanks need him to have a great outing after some of the clunkers over the past few games…I hope this TBA guy is good, J/K. Thanks to Wednesday’s doubleheader it is unclear who will take the mound in the finale but all signs point to Sergio Mitre, unless he is needed out of the bullpen on Friday or Saturday.
Finally, when you think things have hit rock bottom for the Bombers (being shutout two times in the span of three games, albeit the only two goose eggs all season), just remember at least they didn’t lose on a walk-off wild pitch like some other NY team. Same old Mets. Speaking of which, they will host the Yanks for three games starting next Friday.
In other news:
Grandy could begin running exercises this weekend, but it is still unclear when he’ll be activated from the DL. He hasn’t played since May 1 and the lineup has missed him dearly.CHoP, out since April 16 with a case of the trots right hamstring strain, could be activated as early as Sunday. He’d be welcomed back to a bullpen that has seen some serious bed shits (no pun intended) since his absence.Swish Dog, who felt a “tug” in his left biceps during the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game and didn’t play Thursday, expects to be back in the lineup for Friday’s tilt against the Twins.Jeter was hit in the left pinkie by Verlander on Thursday but says he’s OK, and also could play on Friday. However, he finished the road trip at 3-for-29 and is hitting .269/.314/.407 on the year, so maybe he could use a day off.C’mon Yanks, get back on track against the Twins. You guys have owned them recently, going 10-0 and outscoring them 56-31 since the start of the 2009 campaign. LET’S GO YANKS!!!

Yanks beat Twins, again
The Yanks moved to 12-0 against the Twinkies (including playoffs) since the start of the 2009 season with a 7-1 shellacking on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota is now 3-25 at New York throughout Ron Gardenhire’s tenure, take that Joe Mauer and your big-ass contract.
Yours truly was at the game, and it was glorious. Pettitte was on, going 6 1/3 shutout innings and yielding two hits with three walks and two strikeouts en route to his fifth win on the year (5-0). To put that in perspective, the last time Andrew Eugene Pettitte was 5-0 he was 24 years old, and his 1.79 ERA and nine runs allowed are THE LOWEST OF HIS CAREER through seven starts. Andy is dandy indeed…even at age 37. I guess that elbow thing is a non-issue. The ageless lefty also made an awesome play in the field to snag a line drive. David Robertson kind of shit the bed but didn’t give up any runs, while Damaso Marte punched out Jim Thome. Boone Logan recorded the final six outs but not without giving up a run first.
Swisher, who is battling a biceps injury, made a phenomenal diving grab
Not only was the defense clicking on all cylinders, but the offense was smacking Liriano and his 178 ERA

Yankees Roll Despite Injuries - Yankees Insider - Bronxnet Sports
This past week, the Yankees have lost Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Curtis Granderson, and Andy Pettitte to injury. But looking at their record, you would never know it, as the Bronx Bombers have won 5 of their last 6, including a three game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. Yankees including the rebounding All-Star Mark Teixeira, the red hot Robinson Cano, budding star Francisco Cervelli, as well as manager Joe Girardi give their take on the resilient team, and thoughts on all they have to look forward to in the future. Hughes Baffles TIgers To Get Yanks Back in Win Column
Final123456789RHEN.Y. Yankees «1010000068100Detroit000000000061WP: P. Hughes (5-0) LP: J. Bonderman (1-2)
Phil Hughes improved to 5-0 on the season with another fantastic start. This time he threw 7 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just five hits, one walk, and struck out 8. Once again, Hughes threw a steady mix of fastballs and cutters to overpower the Tigers lineup. Of his 101 pitches, 62 were four-seam fastball, 28 were cutters, and just 11 were curves, and he had great command of the zone, throwing 71 of his pitches for strikes. His fastball was very good, averaged 92.94 and topped out a 95.1 mph.
He ran into trouble a couple times, but each time was able to escape the inning. He allowed a leadoff double to Miguel Cabrera to leadoff the second, but then struck out Brennan Boesch, Alex Avila and Don Kelly to get out of the inning. Hughes ran into a little more trouble in the fourth when he walked Johnny Damon and gave up a single to Magglio Ordonez to put two on with nobody out. Then, after Cabrera lined out, Hughes gave up another single to Boesch to load the bases. Once again, he would get out of it, this time by striking out Avila and getting Kelly to pop out to Robinson Cano to end the inning. Besides those two minor bumps in the road, tonight was a breeze for Hughes.
Hughes now has an AL best 1.38 ERA, and he shows no signs of slowing down. I'm not sure how long he will keep this up, but as of right now is there a better pitcher in the American League?
After being held scoreless in the first game, the Yankees jumped on the board with two early runs in the nightcap. Brett Gardner singled, stole second, and then scored on an Alex Rodriguez RBI single. Two innings later Derek Jeter walked, stole second, and scored on Mark Teixeira's RBI single.
That's how the score would stay as both teams matched zeros.
After Hughes left the game, Joba Chamberlain came in for a scoreless eighth. Joba once again brought his 2007 fastball with him to the mound, topping out at 97 and averaging 95.83. Of his 15 pitches, 11 were strikes. I had always been a Joba to the rotation guy, but after seeing him regain that fastball it's looking more and more like he's right where he belongs.
The Yankees took all the drama out of this one when they send 12 men to the plate and scored six runs in the top of the ninth. Francisco Cervelli, Gardner, Tex, A-Rod and Randy Winn all picked up at least one RBI in the inning--Tex drove in two--as the Yanks beat up Tigers relievers Phil Coke and Alfredo Figaro.
In desperate need of some work, Mariano Rivera came in for the ninth and needed just 12 pitches (10 strikes) to retire the Tigers in order.
Brett Gardner had a big night, picking up three hits, scoring two and his 16th stolen base of the year. Mark Teixeira also had a nice night, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI. Alex Rodriguez also went 2-for-5 and drove in two. And Francisco Cervelli continued his hot start with a 2-for-4 night.
The Yankees look for a series split when they send CC Sabathia to the mound tomorrow afternoon. He will be facing Tigers ace Justin Verlander. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.

Swisher Day-to-Day
Marc Carig is reporting that Nick Swisher left tonight's game with left biceps soreness. He's listed as day-to-day. With Granderson on the DL, let's all hope this doesn't keep him out for much time. The Yankees cannot afford any more injuries right now.

Yankees Sign Tim Redding
The Yankees have signed Tim Redding to a minor league contract. Redding, 32, who was pitching for the Colorado Rockies's Triple-A affiliate but was released yesterday morning. So far this season for Colorado Springs he is 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 25 innings. He's now headed to Scranton.
This is obviously a depth move for the SWB Yankees rotation. The only way he sees major league time with the Yankees is if there are significant injuries to the starting staff, or they see him as a long man if Aceves and Mitre both go down. Nothing wrong with this move, Redding will most likely not see time in the show and if he does the Yankees will have bigger problems than him.

Yanks Call Up Miranda (seriously this time)
Chad Jennings is reporting that Juan Miranda has been called up, is with the team, and "Has a locker and everything." No word on any corresponding moves, my guess is Russo heads back to SWB.

Today in The Journal News
Still no lineup posted in the Yankees clubhouse. For now, two links from today’s newspaper.
Alfredo Aceves will go on the disabled list today as the latest in a string of injuries that have hit the Yankees roster. The Yankees were optimistic that Aceves would return to the bullpen yesterday, but his back bothered him during a throwing session and he’ll got to New York for tests.
The Yankees will play two games today, with Javier Vazquez returning to the rotation for the opener of the doubleheader. The notebook also has items on Chan Ho Park and the team’s reaction to Jose Valverde’s on-field antics.

Golson in the house, not in the lineup
Greg Golson, not Juan Miranda, is listed on the lineup card as a player on the bench. So far it looks like that’s the move for Alfredo Aceves.
Derek Jeter SS
Brett Gardner CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Nick Swisher RF

UPDATE, 11:13 a.m.: Golson has arrived. We’re still waiting to talk to Girardi about the move. I haven’t seen any other new players and the only player who seems to be missing is Aceves.

Pregame notes: Golson, not Miranda, added to the bench
Despite on-going speculation that Juan Miranda was on his way to Detroit, it was Greg Golson who walked through the clubhouse doors this morning. He’s here for Alfredo Aceves, who went on the disabled list.
“We’ve been short on outfielders,” Joe Girardi said. “And we felt we were covered pitching-wise.”
That doesn’t mean Miranda has been ruled out. For now the Yankees want the expanded depth, not the lefty designated hitter, but Girardi hinted that another move could be in the works in the coming days.
“Eventually we’ll probably, possibly, make a move,” he said.

Series Preview: Detroit
After losing the final game in Boston, the Yankees (and the Red Sox for that matter) are happy they are out of Boston as they go to Detroit for a 4 game series against the Tigers. At the moment it is a battle of second place teams as the Tigers are second in their division behind Minnesota. Lets hope that the Yankees don’t hurt anyone else on this trip.

Braden takes a few more shots at A-Rod on Letterman
Dallas Braden obviously didn’t write those jokes on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight, but he didn’t have any problem dishing them out. Before he delivered the top ten list, Braden spoke about the “A-Rod Situation”. He said that it was a ”slight misunderstanding” and “it’s been taken care of”. Interesting….who is this guy?
Queen Latifah followed him, and apprently she was unaware that walking over Braden’s mound was an unwritten rule of baseball.
Top 10 thoughts that went through Dallas Braden’s head during the perfect game:10. Grandma’s right. Stick it, A-Rod.9. I did it! Oh crap, it’s only the fourth inning.
8. Seriously, how cool a name is Dallas Braden?
7. Now, maybe Justin Bieber will know who I am.
6. I must not tell the world I’m Iron Man.
5. This is something they can never take away from me. But for $50,000, you can have my glove.
4. Next pitch, eyes closed.
3. Even I’ve never heard of me.
2. I should at least give up one hit so I don’t have to do Letterman.
1. Maybe I can give Kate Hudson a call.

Golson Up, No Sign Of Miranda
There have been reports going around for two days now saying the Yankees were going to call up Juan Miranda. Today, Chad Jennings is reporting that Greg Golson, not Miranda, is with the team and is listed on the lineup card as a bench player.
Golson is likely going to take Alfredo Aceves' spot on the roster. Not sure if these means they've nixed their plans to call up Miranda, but as of now he's not with the team.

Yanks Bats Waste Javy's Best Start So Far
Here's a short game 1 summary while we wait for the nightcap....
Many fans, including this one, didn't expect much from Javier Vazquez today, but he surprised us all with his best start of the season by far. He pitched 7 innings for the first time all year and allowed just two runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out a season-high seven Tigers. Vazquez had his best stuff of the year and consistently threw strikes--66 of his 97 pitches were strikes. He worked quickly and looked confident on the mound, which is very good to see.
He had one bad inning, the sixth, when he allowed both runs and four of the five hits he allowed on the day. Austin Jackson started the inning off with a single. Another former Yankee, Johnny Damon, followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corner. Magglio Ordonez knocked in the Tigers first run with a fielders choice. Miguel Cabrera singled to put two on with one out and then Brennan Boesch singled to drive in the Tigers second run. That was it, and sadly it would be enough for the Tigers on this day.
That's because Rick Porcello was even better than Vazquez and held the Yankees scoreless through seven strong innings. He had the sinker working and induced 15 groundball outs. The Yankees had two innings where they could have scored, but both rallies ended on the bat of Ramiro Pena, who left a small village on the base paths. In the second he came up with the bases loaded and two out and flew out to end the inning. Then, in the fourth, he came up with first and second with two out and struck out to end that threat.
After Porcello, Tigers' relievers Ryan Perry and Jose Valverde held the Yankees off the board for the final two to close out the win for Detroit.
The biggest thing for the Yankees today was the performance of Vazquez. He looked like the pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting when they traded for him this offseason. Hopefully, he can keep it up, and hopefully, next time the Yankees offense shows up.
The Yankees look to avoid four losses in a row with Phil Hughes on the mound in game two tonight. He will be facing off against Tigers right-hander Jeremy Bonderman. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game is on YES.

Yankees lose opener in Detroit
It’s hard to blame this one on Javier Vazquez. In his return to the Yankees rotation, the struggling Vazquez pitched seven strong innings but got absolutely no help from his offense. Two runs in the sixth inning were too many for the Yankees, who were shutout in a 2-0 loss at Comerica Park. It was their third straight loss. They’ll have a chance to end the losing streak in a few hours when they play today’s second game.

This Week in Yankees History (5/9-5/15)
This Week in Yankees History
May 9th - May 15th
May 9th
1903 - The Boston Pilgrims top the visiting New York Highlanders by a score of 12-5, with a little help from Umpire Caruthers, who tosses out Highlanders P Jesse Tannehill and 2B Williams for a ball call at home.
1930 - The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers outfielders make only 2 putouts for an AL record, which has never been equaled. Tiger's hurler George Uhle strikes out 8 batters in winning by the score of 5-4, and dropping the Yankees to 7th place. Hank Johnson (7 innings) and George Pipgras are the Yankee hurlers.
1934 - The New York Yankees obtained INF Fred Mullen and $20,000 from the Boston Red Sox for INF Lyn Lary. Fred Mullen never plays for the Yankees at the MLB level.
1940 - The press reports the impending sale of the New York Yankees by the Jacob Ruppert estate to political bigwigs Jim Farley and Jesse Jones. The Sporting News declares the sale will be for $4 million. The imminent sale will resurface on the front page several times during the next year, but it never happens. The Yankees will be sold in 1945 by the Jacob Ruppert Estate to a group of buyers, Del Webb, Dan Topping and Larry MacPhail.
1944 - Joe McCarthy returns as New York Yankees manager after missing much of the Yankees 1944 spring training and the early 1944 AL season due to illness. The team would finish in 3rd place with an 83-71 record.
1949 - At Detroit, the Detroit Tigers set back the 1st-place Yankees by the score of 4-1, behind the 5-hit pitching of Ted Gray. Yankees starter Vic Raschi also allows just 5 hits, including a HR by Richard Wakefield, in taking the loss.
1953 - At Fenway Park, the 1st place New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6-4. Mickey Mantle hits a HR off of P Bill Werle. Mickey is robbed of another when OF Jimmy Piersall makes a sensational catch at the Red Sox bullpen in right-center field.
1954 - Philadelphia A’s C Wilmer (Billy) Shantz, brother of P Bobby Shantz, hits a grand slam HR, the 1st HR of his MLB career. It comes off former A's hurler Harry Byrd, who is now with the Yankees. Shantz will hit just 1 more MLB HR. Wilmer's slam is all the offense the A’s get as the Yankees win the game by a score of 7-4. The nightcap ends in a 1-1 tie, after 9 innings. Bobby and Billy Shantz will be teammates once again with the New York Yankees during the 1960 AL season.
1958 - After 6 straight home rainouts, the Yankees play their 1st home night game of the 1958 AL season, against Washington. Mickey Mantle breaks a 2-2 tie in the 3rd inning with an inside-the-park solo HR off of P Pedro Ramos. New York rolls to a 9-5 win over the Senators.
1959 - The New York Yankees sell back veteran hurler Murray Dickson to the Kansas City A’s.
1964 - At Cleveland, Tribe starter Pedro Ramos gives up 4 HRs to Yankees Tony Kubek, Mickey Mantle, Joe Pepitone, and Hector Lopez, as the Yankees win by a score of 6-2. Pedro Ramos would finish the 1964 AL season with the Yankees, coming to the team in a late season trade in September. He would help out Yogi Berra’s bullpen, but was unable to play in the 1964 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, because the trade was made after August 31st.
1966 - At Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis, the New York Yankees (6-20) edge the Minnesota Twins by the score of 3-2. Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, and Joe Pepitone, with the game-winner in the 9th inning, hit HRs for New York.
1979 - The New York Yankees released veteran golden glove OF Paul Blair, who then signs with the Cincinnati Reds.
1981 - Tom Paciorek hits his 2nd game winning, bottom-of-the-9th inning HR in as many games, a 3-run blow giving the Seattle Mariners, a 6-5 victory over the Yankees. The previous night, Paciorek led off the 9th inning with a solo HR to give the Mariners, a 3-2 victory over the Yankees.
1990 - At Yankee Stadium, the Oakland A's edge the Yankees, by the score of 2-1 in 11 innings. A’s Rickey Henderson scores the 1st run, scoring from 2B on a 6-3 ground out. Rick Honeycutt is the A’s winning pitcher.
1997 - Against the Kansas City Royals in the 6th inning, the Yankees catch Jay Bell in a rundown when Bell is suddenly called out by umpire Dale Ford, who thinks he passed the preceding base runner, Jose Offerman. However, Offerman had been forced out at 3B. Royals' manager Bob Boone argues until the umpires agree and put runners back at 2B and 3B and call for a resumption of play. Chili Davis then lines a 2-run single off of Yankees starter Kenny Rogers to tie the score. The Royals win the game by a score of 7-5 in 12 innings, with the victory going to Randy Veres. The Yankees protest that the rundown play should not have been reversed. Gene Budig of AL office will dismiss the protest, stating that with the rundown there were several scenarios, where Jay Bell could have escaped a tag.
1999 - The New York Yankees defeat the Seattle Mariners by the score of 6-1. Reliever Mike Stanton makes his 1st MLB start for the Yankees, ending his MLB record streak of 552 consecutive relief appearances prior to his 1st start. The previous MLB record was 443 games, which was set by Gary Lavelle of the San Francisco Giants.
May 10th
1868 - Future MLB player, Manager and Hall Of Fame baseball executive Edward Barrow is born. Ed was the manager of 1918 World Champion Boston Red Sox. He was the manager who decided to make Babe Ruth, an everyday player because of his hitting. In 1920, Ed will leave the Red Sox to become the Yankees General Manager, who will through a series of trades with the Red Sox build the Yankees into a World Championship team. In 1931, he signed former NL manager Joe McCarthy to manage the Yankees. In 1932, He hired George Weiss to run the Yankees farm system. He will be with the Yankees front office until 1945, when the Jacob Ruppert Estate sells the team to Del Webb, Dan Topping and Larry MacPhail (1868-1953).
1911 - The Detroit Tigers lose their 1st home game of the 1911 AL season by a score of 6-2, as Yankees hands Tigers starter George Mullin his 1st loss. The Tigers have a 21-2 record and will lead the AL until July 4th.

The New York Yankees top the Chicago White Sox by the score of 13-3. During the game, Yankees OFBen Chapman (1930-1936) shouts racial remarks at a Jewish fan. His behavior will lead the Yankees to trade him in 1936 to the Washington Senators. In 1947, he will lead the dugout bigots in protest of Brooklyn Dodgers black INF Jackie Robinson as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.
1936 - By beating the Philadelphia A's, by the score of 7-2 at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees move into 1st place and will remain there the rest of the 1936 AL season.
